5 New Year’s Resolutions You Should Adopt for a Mold-Free Home in 2016

The new year is approaching with incredible speed. What are your plans? We all have resolutions, and they’re usually to the benefit of our health. Maybe you want to lose weight, or maybe you want to stop smoking. A resolution that most people don’t consider is safeguarding their home against other health issues — like mold infestation. Here at ProCare Restoration, we think there are fewer resolutions that are more noble than preventing mold growth in your home. Learn how here.

  1. Invest in a dehumidifier — and use it.

Mold and moisture are like two peas in a pod. The best way — arguably, the only way — to remove mold is to get the moisture out of your home is to use a dehumidifier. Our experts recommend that you set it at below 60% humidity for the best results. Without moisture, mold won’t thrive. It’s as simple as that.

2. Make sure all areas of your home have good air circulation.

Remember that dehumidifier from number one? Well, it’s not going to do your home any good unless it’s affecting all areas of your house. This is impossible if your home has poor air circulation. If any areas of your home are secluded without proper ventilation, it’s a good idea to place some fans in key areas. Otherwise, you run the risk of moisture settling in.

3. Make sure your gutters are cleaned out and working properly.

This is to prevent leaking in your roof. It happens a lot, and a simple gutter cleaning will go a long way. A leak in your roof is a perfect place for mold to colonize. That’s why we so often hear about mold in attics — because that’s the first place the roof leak travels to.

4. Shut your doors and windows when the air conditioning is on.

Obviously, this is a great tip for anyone, whether you’re trying to prevent mold growth or not. It will save a lot in electric bills. When windows are open and the A/C is on, condensation is likely to form on the walls. This is a great and moist breeding ground for mold.

5. Cover the floor of your crawlspace.

Crawl spaces are also an extremely common place for mold colonization. The reason behind this is that groundwater can easily seep into crawl spaces. Use a simple plastic vapor barrier to cover the flooring, and this will ensure that moisture doesn’t seep up into the area.

If you follow these essential mold prevention tips, your chances of mold colonization in the home are very low. But sometimes, mold does colonize despite our best efforts. If you happen to get a nasty colonization, please call us.
