How to Prevent Water Damage

In order to prevent water damage from causing serious problems, there are certain measures you need to take. Most of them are fairly simple and require little effort. At Procare-Restoration, we want to inform clients of what they can do to prevent us from having to come help. We provide information to better inform our clients, and help them maintain a well-kept home.

Here are some tips to prevent water damage

Clean gutters and spouts

Cleaning your gutters should be a regular occurrence regardless. However, when trying to prevent water damage, it should be priority number one. It’s such an easy way to ensure water doesn’t harm your foundation. Check for any debris such as leaves and sticks and remove them all from your gutters.

Maintain trees and vegetation

Keep in mind the trees and plants that you have surrounding your house. While some trees can be beautiful to have in your lawn, they might have invasive roots. These roots can grow into your water lines and damage your piping system. So do some research on potential trees or plants in order to prevent water damage.

Promptly fix leaks

Check for dark spots underneath your pipes on sinks and toilets. If you notice that the pipes are leaking, fix these immediately. If you let the leaks last for a long period of time they can grow mold and mildew.

Check water pressure

While we all love a high-pressured shower, there are limits to that pressure. If your water pressure is set too high, you pipes may start to fail while trying to handle the pressure. You want your water pressure anywhere from 40 to 70 psi to prevent water damage.

Monitor water bill

If you notice that your water bill has increased way past it’s normal monthly amount, you might have a water leak. Make sure you monitor your bill every month to ensure that there are no leaks within the house.

Inspect Roof

When checking your roof, keep an eye out for missing or damaged shingles. If you notice either of those you should replace and fix them immediately. If not, you run the risk of having leaks from your ceiling and water damage on your roofing.

Don’t Pour Grease or Fat Into Sink

This is something you might have learned as a kid. Whenever you cook fatty foods such as bacon, pour the remaining bacon fat into a jar. Never pour it down the drain, it’s terrible for your pipes and can cause them to clog.

While we never want water damage to affect your home, at Procare-Restoration, we provide clients with the best service possible. So if matters get beyond normal repair, calls us to have your home restored in a timely and efficient manner.
