A Guide to Five of the Most Dangerous Household Molds

Many molds that we commonly find in humid areas of our houses are dangerous to pets and family. Here, we list five of the most dangerous molds and their effects. If you suspect you have one of these molds in your home, it is crucial that you call and get an inspection done as soon as possible.

1. Fusarium:fusarium

This type of mold resides in incredibly wet conditions, and colonizes homes in very humid areas. When infected with Fusarium, people with compromised immune systems get an infection that will spread through the entire bloodstream. Unfortunately, the mortality rate is high in those with compromised immune systems.

2. Penicilliumpenecillium household mold

While some members of this genus actually produce substances used in the drug penicillin, there are also members that are incredibly toxic. The genus of Penicillium has a large range of members, but some of the more toxic have been known to cause cancer or can be toxic to the kidney and liver. Penicillium is found in house dust and old fabrics.

3. Aspergillus aspergillus mold

Usually residing in damp materials (such as damp walls or fabrics), many strains of Aspergillus have been known to produce mycotoxins. These mycotoxins are toxic to all animals, and thus incredibly dangerous when consumed. Some strains also produce alftatoxins, and this can lead to acute hepatitis and immunosuppression.

4. Chaetomium Chaetomium Mold

Strains of Chaetomium have been known to cause brain abscesses, and many can cause Type One allergic reactions and infections. In those with a compromised immune system, fatal infections have been seen. Chaetomium are found on many surfaces containing cellulose, including paper and plant compost.

5. StachybotrysStachybotrys Mold

Stachybotrys is one of the most well-known types of mold. When people are scared, they talk about “toxic black mold” — and this is it. Stachybotrys grows on substances containing cellulose such as wood or paper that have been wet for at least two days. When exposed to Stachybotrys, people usually have a runny nose, puffy eyes, wheezing, skin rashes, and diarrhea.
