Can Household Mold Affect Pets?

What is it like when you come home from work or school each day? If you have pets, it’s probably a momentous occasion. A dog will act like he’s never seen anything more exciting than your face, while the cat might be a bit standoffish that you had the audacity to leave, but ultimately won’t be able to stop herself from rubbing up against your legs. No matter what type of animal you come home to, you know that you’ll come home feeling loved and relaxed.

Animals are one of the many sources of joy in many of our lives. We love them and care for them as payment for their unconditional love. You see, part of the deal is that they expect a safe home to reside in. After all, it’s what our little balls of fluff deserve.

For an animal that spends all day, every day cooped up indoors, mold colonization can affect them very seriously. We need to take extra care of our beloved pets in the event of mold colonization, because mold can effect pets, and it happens fairly often.

Mold generally affects pets in a similar way that it affects humans. The most common effect that mold has on our animals is an allergic response. Even in mold types that are not considered toxic, severe allergic responses are common. Animals will often be seen coughing or sneezing, or will have a stuffy nose and runny eyes. Generally, these are similar to the responses to any allergies.

However, more severe responses to indoor mold infestations do happen as well. If you have toxic mold that has colonized your home, things are going to be much more serious. Symptoms of toxic mold exposure in both animals and humans range greatly, but if the mold has been in your home for quite some time, serious symptoms like coughing up blood or a pulmonary hemorrhage can result.

However, the symptoms are so varied that you should take your animal to the vet if you notice anything is wrong for a proper diagnosis. Even a symptom as small as lethargy can mean that your animal has been exposed to toxic mold.

If you suspect that your house has toxic mold, then take your pet to the vet immediately and get a checkup from your doctor. This isn’t something to mess around with.
