Why Your Humidifier May Be Putting Your Home at Risk

A lot of people use humidifiers during the winter months to combat the dry air that indoor heating creates. The dry air can lead to cracked skin, dry throats, and other uncomfortable side effects. So people turn to their humidifiers to save the day. But did you know your humidifier may be putting your home at risk? Here’s why.

As you already know, humidifiers add moisture to the air. However, too much moisture can lead to mold growth. Furthermore, humidifiers have lots of nooks and crannies to collect dirt and other contaminants the longer you have them.

So what does this mean for your home and your health? Well, it can be detrimental, actually. Particularly because most people don’t think to clean their humidifiers regularly, if at all. Dirty humidifiers can spew dirt and mold spores into the air, triggering allergies and other illnesses

Plus the risk of mold growth is exacerbated during this time of year when the weather is warmer and the air is more moist. This is the time that people start putting away their humidifiers, and they do it without cleaning them first.

If you do this, then you’re giving dirt and mold the chance to grow unchecked in your humidifier until the weather turns cold again. And when you turn it on this coming winter, it will be endangering your health and your home.

But don’t throw out your humidifier just yet! It may not be contaminated if you haven’t had it for very long. The key is to clean it thoroughly and regularly. If you do this, there’s no reason why it should cause mold growth or any other issues in your home.

So be safe and clean your humidifier often. And if you do happen to find mold growth in your home, contact ProCare Restoration right away. We offer mold testing and mold removal to keep you and your family safe.
